DEP blasts PPL's Bucks line plan
Utility's top choice would do most environmental harm, state
says.
"Newbold said the route appears to be the
longest of the three options, not the shortest as PPL has said. He
cited the company's own environmental consultant, who advised
against ''[i]ntrusion into large, unfragmented habitats.'' Newbold
also warned of harm to the Tohickon Creek watershed."

Springfield manager Richard Schilling says the
Allentown-based utility company has been unwilling to consider
changes to placement of the lines, citing an increase in land costs.
“They said it's much more expensive and we don't believe them,”
he said. “The township's position isn't "not in my backyard.'
We welcome them but we welcome them about a mile and a half into our
industrial area.”
Schilling says PPL's plans disregard township zoning laws. He's
concerned the power line route crosses some of the area's treasured
waterways, including the Tohickon Creek Watershed, adding PPL
typically cuts back vegetation and sprays poisons and herbicides to
reduce plant growth.
We
say: Thank you, Richard Schilling & BOS!

How a bill passed in the wee hours by state lawmakers 12
years ago set the stage for surging electricity rates.
"Pushed by Enron and crafted behind closed doors, the 84-page
measure to deregulate Pennsylvania's electric industry was slipped
into a bill that called only for a one-word change in the state's
taxicab law."

"Most of Pennsylvania is included in the newly-created
National Interest Electric Corridor that allows the federal
government to approve new power projects, even if the state objects.
A transmission line is being proposed from Virginia through
southwestern Pennsylvania that could be a test case for the new
federal law. The Allegheny Front’s Ann Murray has this
report."

Springfield Township Manager, Richard Schilling, says the
